Need To Know More About Learning Disabilities?

http://www.ncld.org/

The National Center for Learning Disabilities websites contains helpful information about learning disabilities for teachers and parents. Current update about LDs assist educators and families in the day-to-day instructional day and also keeping long term goals expressed in the Individual Educational Plans (IEPs.) Is this complicated stuff? Yes. So having resources such as the NCLD websites is a wonderful assist for general ed, special ed, and families.

Here are the highlights of NCLD's mission:
  •  We connect parents and others with resources, guidance, and support so they can advocate effectively for their children.
  • We provide evidence-based tools, resources, and professional development to educators to improve student outcomes.
  • We develop policies and engage advocates to strengthen rights and opportunities for all individuals who struggle to learn.

NCLD has current information on many learning disabilities.

What Are Disabilities - What is Learning Disability?GENERAL LD INFO A learning disability is more than a difference or difficulty with learning—it’s a neurological disorder. More >

As a trained Special Education teacher, I would say the information on IEPs is the most precious element at the NCLD website. It is clear, concise, and accurate for parents and school. Really empowering. There are podcasts, videos, and printable resources.

MzTeachuh's List of 25 Movies to Watch With Your Teens

Here are twenty-five of my favorite films. Although most of these are very famous, they might not be to a fourteen year old.  Consider sharing films that meant something to you, sharing personal insights to your life experience. Some are fine for pre-teens, use your own discretion and consider ratings. Make watching your favorite movies a family occasion, to share your feelings and experiences at the time. Kids are amazed to imagine their grownups as kids. This can be a closeness-builder. Don't forget good snacks.

Hurrah for Hulu and Netflix! But I say, even if you use ole skool tek like VHS (as long as it works, why not?) or DVDs, just have a blast from the past.

Teachable Moment: 50th anniversary of Civil Rights Act and the Summer of Freedom

President Lyndon Johnson gives Dr. Martin Luther King the pen he used to signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

Our democracy has a summer of freedom every year. The dynamic struggles of generation after generation to grow and maintain essential definitions of the rights and privileges of  all Americans will never end. But 1964 was a nuclear detonation of fervor, focus and courage. The nation participated in the most important declaration of democracy in history, even more so than July 4, 1776. This declaration came from the minds and souls of the people of all demographics for the purpose of showing the world and all of history who America truly is.  A declaration of democracy certainly not to avoid taxes, but to solidify the rights of citizenship for Americans in 1964 and the future. The legislation in the year 1964 culminated and also created the efforts previous and imminent for not just African Americans, but for women, the disabled and special needs population and all future citizens who join the American endeavor. Folks from all walks of life laid their lives and fortunes on the line, including President Lyndon Johnson, a long time Civil Rights advocate, who fully realized the southern branch of his party would abandon him. Young northerners of all religions and races came south, some to lose their lives to racism, to participate in the events of democracy. Let's honor these and learn from them as our democratic opportunities for the Summer of 2014 are here. Teach a child, comment on articles on the internet, vote, go to town meetings, volunteer. You are free, you are American. You make a difference.
