Gettysburg readies for 150th anniversary of battle

Studying the Battle of Gettysburg, we are stunned by the stubborn hubris of the generals in the face of incomprehensible death. It was such from the beginning of this war, and would continue through to the brutal end.

Gettysburg Battle History

Orvis Sweet, of Vermont.
Survived Gettysburg, died 10 months later.

My mother's family has more than one Civil War hero. This is a photo of Orvis Sweet, my great- grandmother's older brother from Vermont, who chose to serve and survived all the major battles, such as Antietam and Gettysburg, to perish in the Second Battle of the Wilderness.  His surviving siblings, from poor farmers of Vermont and upstate New York, later moved out West and became teachers, Congressmen, and ambassadors.

My father's people from Arkansas, from poor farmers, also, received educations and became teachers and lawyers within one generation. A 'new birth of freedom' for poor white folks, too.

The Civil War: Gettysburg (by Ken Burns)

The entire series is very worth watching. You could find it on Netflix, for sure. Maybe Youtube, in sections.

Joshua Chamberlain: Civil War Hero

This scene summarizes the noble cause as viewed by the North. The very North, Maine to be exact. The entire movie does give insight into the motives of both sides in this war.

2 Scenes from the movie: Gettysburg

In the movie, Gettyburg, Martin Sheen plays Robert E. Lee. As Lee, Sheen make the statement, "I am a Virginian." Which pretty summarize the South's attitude.

Lincoln's Gettyburg Address, which dedicated the battle region as a cemetary, occurred in November, 1863. This year's commemoration will include a new documentary by Ken Burns.

At the American Rhetoric site you can choose an actor to deliver the Gettysburg address. I prefer Sam Waterston, but I wish we had one with Daniel Day-Lewis speaking it.
