All American Cheesy Jokes and Serious Thoughts

Hurrah for the red, white and silly. And Garfield has just the light hearted touch we sometimes need.

Try not to turn each of these jokes and riddles into too much of an opportunity to teach, though with younger children, you might have some 'splaining to do, Lucy.

Teacher: Where was the Declaration of Independence signed?
Student: On the bottom.

Teacher: The Declaration of Independence was written in Philadelphia. True or false?
Student: False. It was written in ink.

What did Paul Revere say at the end of his ride? I've got to get a softer saddle.

And just to be teachery, don't forget Longfellow's adventuresome poem, 'The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.' It's so cheesy, kids love it.

Embarrassed someone saw my crack.
Keep in torch!
Did you hear the one about the Liberty Bell? Yeah, it cracked me up.

What did the visitor say as he left the Statue of Liberty? Keep in torch.

What did one flag say to another--nothing, it just waved.

'What kind of tea do Americans thirst for? Liber--ty. Ha ha.'
What colonists told the most jokes? Punsylvanians.

Very good read.
Now for a serious thought. The greatest founding father, in my opinion, was John Adams. He supported all citizens, and did not believe in slavery, not a bit. He and his family had no connection with slavery at all. He argued in  the Continental Congress for the abolition of slavery, foreseeing the schism it would cause in a new America; which it surely did in the Civil War. He and his wife Abigail supported integration in their home town of Braintree, Massuchusetts, in the local school. John Adams had the education, brilliance and insight to see that the colonies needed to empower all the people no matter what; he worried that the British would treat the American colonies as they had Ireland. He was humble enough to recommend Thomas Jefferson be the compiler and writer of the Congress' thoughts, but historians know it was Adams who was the prime thinker. He was an innovative diplomat, a President who would see the big picture, and a faithful and loving husband and father. I think the latter should count for a lot. Thank you, John Adams, for taking care of baby America.

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. John Adams

Olympic Gold Medal Winner Cullen Jones and the Make a Splash Initiative http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/lane9/news/USA/34367.asp?q=Water-Safety-Make-a-Splash-Tour-Featuring-Cullen-Jones-Hits-New-York

Swimming is so much fun--as close to flying as you can imagine. But lots of kids don't have instruction in swimming and water safety. And, btw, grown-ups, do you swim? Or do you just sit by the pool/lake/river/ocean and watch the kids have fun? Let's get with it! Just for safety's sake if nothing else. And girls and ladies, wet hair shouldn't deter you. There are caps, if desired. Sunburn shouldn't deter you--wear a tee shirt and waterproof sunblock, and watch the time. Find a cool summer hat. Too fat, too skinny? Who cares. And if you swim enough, it will give you a marvelous, smooth, muscular bod, and improve your physical and mental health amazingly. Mostly,  IT IS JUST SO MUCH FUN! And we're not even discussing games, sports, and activities involving water.

See girls, swim caps can look cute.

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter # 7

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

Just wanted to check in to see if I'm cleared to contact MLB and the (Your Team Here) Baseball Organization to see if they can send materials and maybe one of the organization can come for a talk to the kids. What middle schooler wouldn't love this! I watch a lot of baseball, and it seems they are always doing something supportive for the community; I don't think our middle school is too far away for a drive. I've heard (Your Favorite Pitcher Here) lives not too far from here.

Thanks,
Enthusiastic Visionary Staff Member

These are just the top three results from a Google search: community activities MLB. I just know other sports have them, too!

And here's a little of what my team does:

Buster Posey, S F Giants' catcher, giving away gloves. $25,999 of his own money's worth
S.F. Giants: Junior Giants and Round the Bases Reading Program

My suggestion: You have not because you ask not! Think big, get those emails and letters out. Have entire classes practice their letter writing skills--mail them to the White House, your Congressman, sports stars, writers, scientists, movie and TV stars, recording artists. Why not? How very fun that would be to have a visit. You'll at least get a response. Maybe the ASB could do it.
One year my sixth grade in Hawaii was studying the states--each student wrote to at least one governor, and received lots of adorable stuff. It was in 1993--a student wrote to Arkansas and received a letter and picture from Governor Bill Clinton. Hope she still has it!
In 2008, my 7th grade ELA classes watched the Inauguration on tv, and wrote letters to President Obama. I put them in a big envelope and mailed them off to Washington. Just before school ended, we received a lovely color photo and a nice letter from the President. The kids wouldn't believe it was from him, until I showed them the postmark from the White House. How cool. Works every time.
