“Hope” is the thing with feathers - (314)

By Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Beautiful Boy

John Lennon truly had a hard row to hoe and a long way to go before arriving at joy and contentment when his son Sean was born in 1975, on Lennon's own birthday, October 9. Five years later he included this song on his Double Fantasy album, which was released after his murder in 1980. Beautiful, poignant, profound stuff. Life (and death) is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

 Close your eyes
Have no fear
The monster's gone
He's on the run and your daddy's here

[Chorus:]
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy

Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better

[Chorus]

Out on the ocean sailing away
I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll both just have to be patient
'Cause it's a long way to go
A hard row to hoe
Yes it's a long way to go
But in the meantime

Before you cross the street
Take my hand
Life is what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans

[Chorus]

Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Darling, darling, darling
Darling Sean

This video has some lovely photos of John and Sean.

Teachable Moment: Gettysburg, 150 Years Ago On July 1, 2013

Gettysburg readies for 150th anniversary of battle

 http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Gettysburg-readies-for-150th-anniversary-of-battle-4575614.php

Studying the Battle of Gettysburg, we are stunned by the stubborn hubris of the generals in the face of incomprehensible death. It was such from the beginning of this war, and would continue through to the brutal end.

The Battle of Gettysburg: A Lesson Plan for Middle School History

The Civil War: Gettysburg (by Ken Burns)

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsszvmuZBR4

The entire series is very worth watching. You could find it on Netflix, for sure. Maybe Youtube, in sections.

Joshua Chamberlain: Civil War Hero

http://articles.usa-people-search.com/content-joshua-chamberlain-civil-war-hero.aspx

This scene summarizes the noble cause as viewed by the North. The very North, Maine to be exact. The entire movie does give insight into the motives of both sides in this war.

2 Scenes from the movie: Gettysburg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw8Tm550SJ0

In the movie, Gettyburg, Martin Sheen plays Robert E. Lee. As Lee, Sheen make the statement, "I am a Virginian." Which pretty summarize the South's attitude.

Lincoln's Gettyburg Address, which dedicated the battle region as a cemetary, occurred in November, 1863. This year's commemoration will include a new documentary by Ken Burns.

Ken Burns' 'measure of devotion' for Gettysburg Address

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/05/02/ken-burns-gettysburg-address-documentary-vermont/2124081/

At the American Rhetoric site you can choose an actor to deliver the Gettysburg address. I prefer Sam Waterston, but I wish we had one with Daniel Day-Lewis speaking it.

Mother Nature's Son and Tomatoes

A raven ate my first ripe tomato last week and according to research, shiny, moving objects such as dangling CDs should frighten the birds away. This is my beloved, if scratched-up, Disc 2 of the White Album. Too bad it's not Disc 1 with 'Blackbird' on it.

But it does have 'Mother's Nature's Son.' Fitting for a garden, I think.
