Jones said it is not unusual for new administrations to update documents or to eliminate redundancies, but she had never seen so many eliminated at one time.
“If the documents that are on this list are all covered in newer documents that were released — which sometimes does happen — that would be fine,” said Jones.” Our goal is to make sure that parents and schools and educators understand how these laws work, and the department plays a critical role in that.”

Silly Music For Halloween #4 ...you hear the door slam...

5th Grade Kids Dance to Thriller

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU8VcP8AbWs

This looks like so much fun, and good exercise, too. Loosen up, Teach! Take a few 20 minutes sessions to dance! And what outstanding music by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson.  We can take some of the scarey out of Halloween by making fun of it.

Michael Jackson - Thriller Music Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG6oy46qKE4

"Thriller"

[1st verse]
It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
You're paralyzed

[Chorus]
'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike
You know it's thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight

[2nd verse]
You hear the door slam and realize there's nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you'll ever see the sun
You close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination, girl
But all the while you hear the creature creepin' up behind
You're out of time

[Chorus]
'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
There ain't no second chance against the thing with forty eyes, girl
Thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside of killer, thriller tonight

[Bridge]
Night creatures call and the dead start to walk in their masquerade
There's no escapin' the jaws of the alien this time
(they're open wide)
This is the end of your life

[3rd verse]
They're out to get you, there's demons closing in on every side
They will possess you unless you change the number on your dial
Now is the time for you and I to cuddle close together, yeah.
All through the night I'll save you from the terror on the screen,
I'll make you see

[Chorus]
That this is thriller, thriller night
'Cause I can thrill you more than any ghoul would ever dare try
Thriller, thriller night
So let me hold you tight and share a killer, diller, chiller, thriller here tonight

[Chorus]
'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
Girl I can thrill you more than any ghoul would ever dare try
Thriller, thriller night
So let me hold you tight and share a killer, thriller

I'm gonna thrill you tonight

[Rap performed by Vincent Price]
Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize your neighbourhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse's shell
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grisly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

[Into maniacal laugh, in deep echo]

Teaching empathy when empathy is hard to find

http://trustedk12.com/teaching-empathy-empathy-hard-find/

Anxiety. Stress. Bullying. Suicide. Violent protests. Shootings. Fake news. The world that students are grappling with is both scary and challenging. To help students navigate young adulthood and make sense of the headlines and what they see and hear around them, school leaders everywhere are integrating lessons on empathy into the school experience, either in the classroom or beyond it.

Acknowledging What Students Do Well

https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/uk/17/10/acknowledging-what-students-do-well

Helping students develop their analytical skills, rather than simply their ability to memorize facts and processes, is a tricky project — something that separates an exemplary teacher from a good one. Among the avenues for encouraging those deeper-thinking tools: positive, public reinforcement of the strong thinking you hear and observe in your classroom.

They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
The Addams Family.

Their house is a museum
When people come to see 'em
They really are a scream
The Addams Family.

So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We're gonna pay a call on

Do Schools Need Certified Teachers? Do Children?

http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/leadership_360/2017/10/do_schools_need_certified_teachers_do_children.html?cmp=SOC-EDIT-FB

Schools, their students, teachers and leaders, hold the future of this country in their hands.  Yes, it sounds like hyperbolic, but it is not.  The fiscal environment of education combined with changing demographics over the last decade or so coexisting with expanding career options and economic shifts has led to declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs. As a response, we hear emerging discussions about reducing the requirements for teacher certification and a growing charter system that in some cases, does not require teachers to be certified at all.

About Me

My photo
Melanie Link Taylor, M.A.
If someone asks what my career is, I respond, "Learning how people learn." I have been a teacher for all levels and handicaps of Special Education, English/ELA grades 7-12, as well as each grade level of elementary. I just love the fun of learning and seeing the students advance. I am from California, received a Masters in Special Education from Chapman University, a B.A. in English and Art from Mount St. Mary's University in Los Angeles. I have been teaching in the Inland Empire, as well as the High Desert of California, since 1994. The MzTeachuh blog I started in 2011 brings a privilege to participate in the online community. Cultivating the Melanie Link Taylor Learning Garden and Wildlife Habitat keeps me grounded and empowered to share the wonders of nature with my students.
