Principal's Suggestion Box Letters #10 and #11

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Letter # 10
Dear Principal,

I have a concern about collaborating with Special Education. Mr. W is requiring too much input and time on behalf of just one student, who seems to be doing fine without much outside help. I know it is just two weeks into the school year, but with 34 fourth graders (and several more 'active'  ones than usual), it seems an inappropriate use of my time to be focusing on one student. His mother is just as bad, wanting daily updates and 'documentation' of his progress. And Mr.W doesn't just pull Jordan over to the table to finish his work, like Mrs. T did before she retired, but helps any student that requests it. Is he supposed to do that? Is he qualified to do that? It seems disruptive to the flow of the class. He makes suggestions about all the students. This year just isn't like other years, like its supposed to be. Can you speak to Mr. W?

Thanks,
Mrs. M, Concerned and Somewhat Overwhelmed Teacher

Letter #11
Dear Principal,

I have a concern about collaborating in the General Education room of Mrs. M. She has experience working with Special Education with Mrs. T, but now the model has changed, per District instruction. The individualized education plan that Jordan has includes Common Core goals of working with other students. Mrs. M is resisting this, and prefers he has pull-out, either to the Resource Room or to a corner of the class. When Jordan does join my Reading Intervention in the Resource Room, he misses Math instruction in Mrs. M's room, which he isn't supposed to. She says 'it is just so much more quiet when he's gone.' I know there are several 'active' students in her class this year, which I can help with, but Jordan really needs his math. Jordan's parent feels that Mrs. M is cutting her off, and won't communicate. Can you help us?

Thanks,
Mr.W,  Concerned and Somewhat Overwhelmed Teacher

My suggestion: Collaboration can be a sensitive issue. Principals need to be up-to-date on District expectations as well as school personalities (not that, as professionals, we let personality get in the way. Ha!) In this scenario, there is more at play than only collaboration. Mrs. M's class may have been the 'dumping ground' for the active kids plus the Special Ed. kids. That sometimes happens, unfortunately. If the school at large just has lots of active kids, then there needs to be a schoolwide behavior management plan developed by the school staff that is generally implemented by all staff all day--at recess, lunch, before and after school programs--so the kids know what to expect, and the limitations. The classrooms will be more calm.

As far as two teachers collaborating with a new model--have a training for all teachers involved led by a District Special Education leader. Clarify expectations in the IEP for each other and the parents,  and what the District needs from the team. You might even invite the parents. Don't let them loose on each other the first day of school cold turkey. A teacher's classroom is her/his castle--don't make it so the SpecEd teacher sets off an intruder alert. Principals have great influence on their staff and can create a positive, calm climate of camaradie.

Thanks, благодаря, Merci, Dank, Gracias, завдяки, 谢谢, teşekkürler, शुक्रिया

One million pageviews since 2012!
It is a great privilege to serve the worldwide educational community by putting together the MzTeachuh blog. What an amazement to reach around the world everyday from my humble home in SoCal. This brings me such joy and honor. One million views.

Google Blogster provides statistics, and here are the top readers from the last three years, almost to the day. MzTeachuh began January 2012. USA, Russia, France, Germany, Canada, UK, Ukraine, China, Turkey, and India.

The internet brings outstanding educational news to me everyday--Edutopia, MindShift KQED, TeachThought, Edudemic, Education Week, Special Needs Digest, UnderstoodOrg, eSchool News. Professional development par excellence.

Appreciation also to social media for providing free distribution. Twitter, Facebook, eGoogle, Pinterest, eBlogger, LinkedIn, and StumbleUpon sends out MzTeachuh on one gargantuan paper route, and I get to make new colleagues and friends.

Teach100 has provided incentive for me to improve by ranking MzTeachuh--it is a little like being graded on a curve a couple times a week, competing in a class of 800 edublogs and educational sites. Once I got to 156! But, usually at about 290 something. And I'm just competitive enough to keep at it.

Wish y'all were here last night to have pizza--stuffed crust, extra cheese, black olives, sausage--to celebrate with us. But here's Kool & the Gang to at least include you in the celebration with music.

Teaching Is Giving Lifelong Reading

These links are not for Reading Specialists, nor those educators involved exclusively with reading instruction. These links are intended for parents, and since all teachers are reading teachers, too, for those in classroom situations where some practical techniques in the midst of the core curriculum may help. I'm a big fan of taking secondary vocabulary and syllabicating, decoding the syllable, then reading the whole word in context for meaning.

We are so honored to teach young people to read.

My cherie amour, lovely as a summer day
My cherie amour, distant as the milky way
My cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore
You're the only girl my heart beats for
How I wish that you were mine

In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street
I've been near you, but you never noticed me
My cherie amour, won't you tell me how could you ignore
That behind that little smile I wore
How I wish that you were mine

La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la la la, La la la la la la

Maybe someday, you'll see my face among the crowd
Maybe someday, I'll share your little distant cloud

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter #5

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this school year. My daughter Yolanda had the best year ever. Mr. --- ran such a fun, interesting class, her Fifth Grade couldn't be better. Her grades were up and her IEP goals met. We are so grateful.

Yolanda loves to help, and Mr. --'s style of classroom management gave her lots of chances to be busy, up and about, not just in her desk. She loved the projects in class and activities outside. The school garden was heaven to her. And she was so excited to meet the PE goal in the fifth grade mile.

Her previous teacher (in another district)  felt that the active kids needed to learn to be quiet and controlled, and Yolanda's desk was lined up facing out the window with about six other students. When she told me, I wasn't sure if that was really happening until I brought treats for the holiday party, and there there they were, segregated from the class, and couldn't even see the board. It wasn't just the Resource kids, or the bad kids, either. Just the talkative ones who had trouble focusing on the workbooks. I am so relieved to have found your school.

I hear great things about the Sixth grade teachers--projects, PE, afterschool clubs. Yolanda is interested in computers (her older brother has a computer business.) I understand the kids learn to code.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. I will volunteer as I can. Yolanda's brother, Angel--the computer guy--is interested in helping also.

Your Truly,
Yolanda's Mom

Why Is Project-Based Learning Important?

http://www.edutopia.org/project-based-learning-guide-importance

Teaching Techniques for Inattentive and Overactive Children

http://www.education.com/reference/article/Ref_Teaching_Techniques/

Physical activity may help kids do better in school, studies say

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/physical-activity-may-help-kids-do-better-in-school-studies-say/2013/10/21/e7f86306-2b87-11e3-97a3-ff2758228523_story.html

My suggestion: Creating a well-balanced class is crucial for kids, they are like Renaissance learners and need daily experience in STEM, ELA, the Arts, PE, and throw in a school garden while you're at it. All learners (IEP or not) deserve a well-rounded, healthy experience. A sedentary, punitive classroom does them harm.

If a teacher has active kids, diagnosed ADHD or not, the classroom management needs to match the need. The very opposite of what active kids needs is isolation--it makes matters worse as their brains crave activity. Teachers can collaborate by grade level or subject to provide resources for the classroom all kids need. Special education teachers have important strategic input for kids with ADHD as well.

Principals must be aware of the functioning of all classrooms. That is surely part of  leadership. I have observed both classroom scenarios described above. The brilliant classroom outcome was a direct result of staff working hard together under the leadership of a good principal. The other was the isolation not only of the kids, but the teacher from schoolwide and district resources to aid in the design of a better schedule of activities for this specific group of kids. The principal didn't have a clue what was happening.

Paul McCartney and Jane Asher (his muse for this song.)
The Beatles - Here, There and Everywhere

To lead a better life

I need my love to be here

Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with a wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there's something there
There, running my hands through her hair
Both of us thinking how good it can be
Someone is speaking, but she doesn't know he's there
I want her everywhere
And if she's beside me I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her
Everywhere, knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching their eyes and hoping I'm always there
I want her everywhere
And if she's beside me I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her
Everywhere, knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching their eyes and hoping I'm always there
I will be there, and everywhere
Here, there and everywhere
