A More Complete Picture of Student Learning

I’m really excited to see that educators are clear about the use of formative and summative assessment. We’re using formative assessment to gauge the effectiveness of our teaching and to know what our students know and have yet to learn. We’re using summative assessment to evaluate student progress toward course goals and report grades.

An idea that is beginning to gain a lot of favor in educational circles at the moment is the notion of fixed versus growth mindsets, and how they might relate to students and learning. Based on the work of Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, the idea of mindset is related to our understanding of where ability comes from. It has recently been seized upon by educators as a tool to explore our knowledge of student achievement, and ways that such achievement might be improved.

Hearing Puts Civil Rights, Special Education Nominees on Hot Seat

Democrats on the Senate education committee had some tough questions for President Donald Trump's picks to head up civil rights and special education policy at the U.S. Department of Education as the members vetted them for confirmation.
Kenneth Marcus, who is currently the head of a Jewish civil rights organization and has been tapped to lead the department's office for civil rights, and Johnny Collett, the program director for special education at the Council of Chief State School Officers, are likely to be confirmed.

When things go sideways these days with a lesson or student behavior, I have strategic ways of handing the issue quickly and effectively—approaches I’ve developed through much trial and error and reflection. But there are still challenges that I don’t foresee and that I’m not prepared for. When these occur, I try (though it’s not necessarily easy) to commit to having an open mind and remaining proactive.

Merry Christmas from MzTeachuh

Joy, optimism, kindness, generosity--celebrating the birth of Christ heightens and enhances the best of humans.

Here are my sincere wishes for you this Christmas Day:

Be rested.
I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustains me.Psalm 3:5
Keep joy in people moments.
Your love has given me great joy. Philemon 1:7
Have fun.
So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun. Ecclesiastes 8:15
Optimistically plan.
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. " Jeremiah 29:11
Have confidence who you are.
You are acceptable in the beloved. Ephesian 1:6

Room E 605--the merriest of all!
Teachers are most highly privileged in society--endowing important status to our students of citizenship, literacy, function in work, value in the community (including families, neighbors, and colleagues.)
My heart to yours, teach, Merry Christmas and all the extensive blessings!

As a vegetarian, Paul feels he should 'set the turkey free in the forest' and changes the words to this Mel Torme song. Diana Krall is on the keyboard and provides a little harmony.

Laughing All The Way

Laughing all the way on a snow boogie board.
 Dashing through the snow
  In a one-horse open sleigh
  O'er the fields we go
  Laughing all the way
  Bells on bobtail ring
  Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
  A sleighing song tonight!

  (chorus)
  Jingle bells, jingle bells,
  Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
  In a one-horse open sleigh.
  Jingle bells, jingle bells,
  Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
  In a one-horse open sleigh.

DIANA KRALL LYRICS

"Jingle Bells"

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight, O

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh [repeat]

Now the ground is white
Go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! You'll take the lead

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh. [repeat]

Hey, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

...To Face Unafraid The Plans That We Made...

 "Winter Wonderland"

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kids knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Walking in a winter wonderland,
Walking in a winter wonderland.
