Bill Walsh, one of the best ever coaches

Bill Walsh, that's the coach of coaches.
He wrote some very positive advice for
teachers and everyone who works with kids.

"Kids who take part in any sport get to feel
the euphoria of victory, but they also learn
how to deal with loss."

"Having to play a role determined by coaches, whether it is exactly what a player hopes for or not, teaches the acceptance of authority -- but not an automatic, robotic acceptance."

"Athletes have to also understand that anxiety is not a flaw, and that overcoming it is
possible -- and sometimes a lot easier than they thought."

"The social elements of team sports have far-reaching effects. Team members develop the ability to communicate under stress. They learn to respect others whether they like them or not, and if a team is ethically coached, its members also are taught to respect their opponents no matter how fierce the rivalry."

Teachable Moment: Kids' Indoor Herb Garden and Recipes

Ceramic  turkey is staring us down with that beady little eye.

Fragrance, color, texture, taste! A sensory cooking delight for kids to grow in a window, on a balcony, or in the garden--  the kids' herb garden.

Live herbs are in grocery stores.
Basil is a little more delicate.
Many herbs are highlighted in grocery stores and garden shops this time of year due to luscious holiday cooking. Your children can be in charge of growing the herbs for fresh ingredients for stuffing, dressing, gravies, sidedishes, and soups (and if you count mint, for desserts, too.) Almost all herbs are hearty, easy to grow, and readily available.

The most popular herbs to grow in a kitchen are sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano, marjoram, mint, basil, parsley, and lesser known, tarragon.Sage is

Bees really, really love mint.
very hearty and versatile; so is mint. Both can be transplanted to the outside in the spring.

These herbs are not only for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's  sidedishes and soups, but are also excellent for Italian sauces, pizzas, and Mexican food. Kids can learn about cooking while gardening.

Here are a few links with recipes of mine that kids can participate with; I am far from an expert in cooking and gardening but it is so refreshing and interesting we can all enjoy it. Cooking with kids is really fun and simple--and hanging out with them cooks up some delicious memories.

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You - Lyrics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3mVaMhoJCA

"I Will Always Love You"
If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way

And I... will always love you, ooh
Will always love you
You
My darling, you...
Mmm-mm

Bittersweet memories –
That is all I'm taking with me.
So good-bye.
Please don't cry:
We both know I'm not what you, you need

And I... will always love you
I... will always love you
You, ooh

[Instrumental / Sax solo]

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I wish you joy and happiness
But above all this I wish you love

And I... will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you

I will always love you
I, I will always love you.

You.
Darling, I love you.
I'll always...
I'll always love you.
Ooh
Ooh

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter #6

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

This is just a little suggestion that will help the staff out, especially the ladies. This is a little embarrassing, but is concerning the availability and access to the restrooms.

The current am schedule eliminated the fifteen minute recess (replaced with teacher-led structured exercise) so teachers have no chance to use the restroom from 7:30 to 11:45 am. Neither do any of the students, Grades 1-5, without leaving instruction.

Also, a retired friend of mine won't sub here anymore because she wasn't given a restroom key for the teacher port-a-potty restrooms near the portable classrooms (where mine is located.) She says she is taking diurectics, and the schedule was bad enough, but it is at least an eighth of a mile to the restrooms in the admin building.

Thank you for helping.

My suggestion:  Don't be a martyr. Speak up about basic conveniences in the schedule, and you'll be helping all the staff. Restroom breaks (all humans need a morning restroom break --when you drink more water for health's sake, guess what), appropriate staff room (is it clean? cheerful? functional? safe?) Principals can influence these things.

What GenEd and SpecEd Need to Know About Each Other

About Collaboration Among Regular & Special Education Teachers

http://everydaylife.globalpost.com/collaboration-among-regular-special-education-teachers-13906.html

With the new federal push to improve outcomes for Special Education students, GenEd will be asked to participate more fully in the development and execution of services for Special Education.

Behind the Headline: States’ Special Education Services Face Tighter Oversight by the Obama Administration

http://educationnext.org/behind-headline-states-special-education-services-face-tighter-oversight-obama-administration/

What do both GenEd and SpecEd need to know to create an efficient collaboration?

First, I suggest GenEd do a little homework on the Special Education system, and the types of needs they will most frequently encounter in their classrooms or at the school site.

What do General Education Teachers Need To Know About Special Education?

http://www.schoolpsychologistfiles.com/2008/11/what-do-general-education-teachers-need-to-know-about-special-education.html

Types of Learning Disabilities

http://www.ncld.org/types-learning-disabilities

And, SpecEd needs do a little research, too, checking out their school sites participation in Common Core (or other standards adopted) in order to write copacetic goals and objectives into the IEP. The best goals and objectives are ones that are already being taught in the general instruction, with as little need for adaptation to service the student as possible. When students need assistance outside of class or the schoolday, what tutoring or help classes do the school offer? Find out the teachers' schedules, office hours, and style of teaching. Be sure to relate your schedule.

Resources for Writing IEPs Aligned to Common-Core Standards

Collaborating on a daily basis, in the same room, requires a great deal of communication. You don't have to be best friends to collaborate, but you do need to be professional. There are several methods of collaboration in the classroom. Together GenEd and SpecEd teachers choose the best plan for the lesson.

Collaboration Between General and Special Education Teachers

Collaboration between General and Special Education Teachers. ERIC Digest.

Each teacher is a professional, highly qualified in an area of expertise. I would suggest SpecEd teachers only do direct instruction of a GenEd class if they hold credentials in that specific area, and GenEd teachers absorb information and advice from the SpecEd teacher on the Special Needs student's detailed program (as in the IEP) and input from the parents. The school experience of a Special Needs student is very fluid, possibly including health issues, emotional balance, and input from parents at least on a weekly basis. GenEd and SpecEd really need to communicate!
