'I Paint Flowers So They Won't Die.' So said Frida.

Folk Flowers, Frida Kahlo

Born in Coyoacán, Mexico, young Frida's life was punctuated by prominent events: polio, the Mexican Revolution, and a horrific bus accident among them. Recovery from the bus trauma left her isolated and in extreme pain; painting became her distraction and solace. Self-portraits were her frequent focus, as she explained, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."

Long celebrated as a folk icon in her homeland, it was not until the 1980s, well after her 1954 death, that Kahlo became widely recognized for her artistic skill. Now, her brightly-colored, often surreal artwork is in high demand. She has also been memorialized in movies and songs, on currency, and in countless books. Her birthplace and adult residence, The Blue House, is maintained today as a museum in her honor.

Nature, My Garden, and Me: Adorable Squash Bee Wakes Up Sleepy

Our veggie and herb garden is home to a vibrant community of bees and other pollinators. Here is a squash bee just waking up after sleeping all night in a zucchini blossom which has just opened up in the morning light. The squash plant is in a container--a plastic trash can with holes drilled in the bottom, lots of earthworms inhabit the composted soil.

We Brought The Summer With Us

Samhradh Samhradh

The song was first heard of in Dublin 1730, a song written for the Gaelic festival known as Bealtaine that marks the beginning of summer, celebrated April 30 to May 1.
During the festival there is the lighting of bonfires and making of flower decorations.
This song is a perfect summer tune to listen to during a road trip through the country side.
Samhradh, samhradh, bainne na ngamhna
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn
Samhradh buí na nóinín glégeal
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn

Thugamar linn é ón gcoill chraobhaigh
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn
Samhradh buí ó luí na gréine
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn

Samhradh, samhradh, bainne na ngamhna
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn
Samhradh buí na nóinín glégeal
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn

Tá an fhuiseog ag seinm ‘sag luascadh sna spéartha
Áthas do lá is bláth ar chrann
Tá an chuach is an fhuiseog ag seinm le pléisiúr
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn

Samhradh, samhradh, bainne na ngamhna
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn
Samhradh buí na nóinín glégeal
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn

Summer, summer, the calves milk
We brought the summer with us
Yellow daisies Summer glégeal
We brought the summer with us

We brought it from leafy woods
We brought the summer with us
Yellow summer from sunset
We brought the summer with us

Summer, summer, the calves milk
We brought the summer with us
Yellow daisies Summer glégeal
We brought the summer with us

The lark playing 'sag swinging in the skies
Pleased to day flower tree
The cuckoo is the lark singing with joy
We brought the summer with us

Summer, summer, the calves milk
We brought the summer with us
Yellow daisies Summer glégeal
We brought the summer with us
In my family, the last immigrants were Irish, arriving in the USA in 1880. From Cork and Dublin, they passed stories, humor, generosity and spirituality down through the decades, and I find the resources of modern life to learn more about them is an amazing boon to my understanding of who we are and what we give to the world. I especially like that our Irish language flourishes.
As I love my garden--the concept of summer (flowers),  birds, and leafy woods bring summer with them is precisely how I feel.

 Summer Song

Wanderer moon
smiling a
faintly ironical smile
at this
brilliant, dew-moistened
summer morning,–
a detached
sleepily indifferent
smile, a
wanderer’s smile,–
if I should
buy a shirt
your color and
put on a necktie
sky-blue
where would they carry me?

The All-Remote Schedule: No Risk to Health, High Risk to Learning

The rapid switch to distance learning for 55 million schoolchildren was never going to measure up to the experience of five days a week of teaching and learning in classrooms, despite the hard work of educators. The kids who did log in regularly had limited live instruction and few opportunities to collaborate and learn from each other. In many school districts, teachers did not teach new content at all, sticking to reviewing standards they’d already covered. In other cases, distance learning amounted to little more than schools posting lessons online and leaving it up to students and parents to figure it out.
