How Important Are Principals?

http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/walt_gardners_reality_check/2016/10/how_important_are_principals_1.html?cmp=SOC-EDIT-FB

Perhaps principals have always been expected to be more than merely administrators, but I believe the situation today is unprecedented.  That's because the accountability movement demands results that would be alien to principals decades ago.
With so much depending on strictly quantifiable outcomes, one-fourth of the country's principals leave their schools each year.  (I think the rate is higher in troubled schools.)  That's not at all surprising.  The pressure to post higher test scores and higher graduation rates becomes too great to bear.

When is a student ‘gifted’ or ‘disabled’? A new study shows racial bias plays a role in deciding

Racial bias among educators may play a larger role than previously understood in deciding whether students are referred for special education or gifted programs, according to new research from NYU.
The study, the first of its kind to show a direct link between teacher bias and referrals for special services, found stark differences in how teachers classify students of different racial and ethnic backgrounds showing identical signs of disability or giftedness.

We live in an increasingly pluralistic society where people run up against the thoughts and beliefs of others more and more frequently. Helping children learn to navigate the space between what they believe and what others believe is perhaps one of the best ways we can overcome the hate we see in so many facets of our society today.

How to... plan engaging maths lessons

https://www.tes.com/news/school-news/breaking-views/how-plan-engaging-maths-lessons

All too often, maths gets branded a "dull" subject. Particularly if you are a non-specialist, it can be difficult to think of ways to make your maths lessons really come alive.

About Me

My photo
Melanie Link Taylor, M.A.
If someone asks what my career is, I respond, "Learning how people learn." I have been a teacher for all levels and handicaps of Special Education, English/ELA grades 7-12, as well as each grade level of elementary. I just love the fun of learning and seeing the students advance. I am from California, received a Masters in Special Education from Chapman University, a B.A. in English and Art from Mount St. Mary's University in Los Angeles. I have been teaching in the Inland Empire, as well as the High Desert of California, since 1994. The MzTeachuh blog I started ten years ago brings a privilege to participate in the online community. Cultivating the Melanie Link Taylor Learning Garden and Wildlife Habitat keeps me grounded and empowered to share the wonders of nature with my students.
