Principal's Suggestion Box #16

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,
I am very concerned about how my daughter is being treated by other girls in the Grade 5 GATE class. Mr. J seems to teach interesting information, but the girls are really mean, even online.
I have restricted Emily's use of the internet, but several others girls in the area, not only at our elementary school, are friends on FB and Twitter and other sites. They communicate mean comments instantly, even pictures.
I don't know what to do.
My daughter is quiet, doesn't make friends easily, and some of her friends from previous grades at this school now won't talk to her for fear they will also be targeted.  The parents we are acquainted with don't know what's going on.
It is my opinion there are students in the class that are future sociopaths. I know that's harsh. But the cold-blooded treatment of my daughter and others in the class (the three main ones make some of the boys cry frequently) is cruel, even some of the substitute teachers won't go back. The Middle School is famous for mean girls.
I am very concerned for my daughter's mental health in this climate.

Please help,
Emily's Dad

My Two-Cents Worth: A principal sets the tone for everyone. A complaint like this,  from the legal ramifications, shows there needs to be some Social and Emotional Instruction going on, as well as communication between principals. We want to have improvement in student relationships, of course, and avoid notoriety if a student commits suicide due to cyberbullying. A principal, being made aware by a parent (when the teacher is clueless), has the responsibility to check things out. Implementing an anti-bullying program immediately would be wise. Professional development for the staff on cyber-bullying, and the signs of mental delicacy in students should also be on the schedule right away. Supervising a positive learning climate at your school is always on the agenda.

Malala Is A Mighty Girl

Thanks to A Mighty Girl for this post.

Congratulations to Malala Yousafzai for winning the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize! The Pakistani girls' education activist, who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012, has been lauded worldwide for her advocacy on behalf of girls and women. Today, the Nobel Prize committee announced that Malala will share the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote and protect girls' right to education. The 17-year-old is the youngest person to ever win the Peace Prize.

Since recovering from the attack, Malala has gone on to speak around the world about the necessity for ensuring equal access to education. In 2013, UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown launched a petition in her name, calling for nations to ensure that all children are in school by 2015. Speaking to the UN General Assembly on July 12, 2013, the first Malala Day, she said, “The wise saying, ‘The pen is mightier than sword’ was true. The extremists are afraid of books and pens. The power of education frightens them…. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.”

The Nobel Committee fittingly made the announcement on the eve of the International Day of the Girl, a day dedicated to promoting girls’ human rights and challenging gender inequalities around the world. The theme of the 2014 International Day of the Girl is “Empowering adolescent girls: ending the cycle of violence,” making Malala an excellent role model of how an empowered, educated teen can change the world.

The Committee's chair Thorbjorn Jagland emphasized these qualities, stating: "[Malala] has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations. This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle, she has become a leading spokesperson for girls’ rights to education.”

Malala shares the Nobel Peace Prize with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian children’s rights activist who has campaigned for decades against child labor; his organization, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, has freed over 80,000 children from forced labor -- and worked to educate and rehabilitate them so that they could go on to live normal lives. At the announcement, the Nobel committee said, “The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism.”

A Mighty Girl congratulates Malala and Satyarthi on their well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize!

You can read more about the award and watch a video of the announcement on CNN at http://cnn.it/1rkNoNZ

To share Malala's incredible story with children, a Young Readers Edition of her autobiography was recently released for ages 10 and up at http://www.amightygirl.com/i-am-malala-youth-edition

Her autobiography, "I Am Malala," is also highly recommended for readers ages 14 and up at http://www.amightygirl.com/i-am-malala

To help children and teens better understand the challenges many children around the world face in order to go to school, we've also put together a post featuring our favorite books for young readers on children's educational access issues: "Honoring Malala: Mighty Girl Books on Children's Fight for Education" at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog/?p=4057

Teachable Moment: Our Malala Won The Nobel Peace Prize Today

Two years ago today, Malala was shot by the Taliban because she was a girl pursuing an education. Today, she is the winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

Thank you for all you do, Malala, and congratulations. http://huff.to/1nfJI4S

Congratulations to Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai!

Her work promoting the basic human right to education represents the struggle of millions of young people. She has proved that no matter your age, your voice can change the world

Today Malala Yousafzai became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her resolve to stand up and speak out for an education for all children is an inspiration.

Teaching Is Giving Lifelong Reading

These links are not for Reading Specialists, or those educators involved exclusively with reading instruction. These links are intended for parents, and since all teachers are reading teachers, too, for those in classroom situations where some practical techniques in the midst of the core curriculum may help. I'm a big fan of taking secondary vocabulary and syllabicating, decoding the syllable, then reading the whole word in context for meaning.

We are so honored to teach young people to read.

Happy Birthday, Johnny

John Lennon
I appreciate this photo of John Lennon, taken at a time when he was well, happy with his family, productive and optimistic. He was healing.

His work collaborating with his band mates, the Beatles, and after their breakup, is remarkable poetry that is paired with unmatchable music. He narrated his personal journey. He grieved, joked, philosophized, loved and hated. He wondered why the kids in England in the sixties made the Beatles more popular than Jesus. He wanted the world to give peace a chance. He and his bandmates had a death threat from the KKK for refusing to play to a segregated crowd in the American South. He supported a united Ireland. He got messed up, just about joined the unfortunate club of rockers who overdosed at age 28, came out of it with almost all the bridges he had burned rebuilt. He was a househusband and raised his second child from birth to age five. Then he ran out of time. We ran out of time, too. Johnny, we hardly knew ye.

I've already put up many blogs with music John made with his bandmates. Here are a couple more that have always meant something positive to me. And I don't underestimate the power of collaborating with McCartney, Harrison and Starr. They created each other during a period of unparalleled opportunity for four young scousers.

Love this song, maybe because my beautiful boy Sean was born around the same time. The video on the link is very poignant, have a box of tissue ready.
