Ah, Spock, I Knew Him Well

Ah, Spock, I knew him well.
The suspension of disbelief doesn't begin to describe the Trek experience. Serving on the Enterprise with Jean Luc and Worf, or visiting the Doctor at the medical bay on Voyager. Maybe being ripped off by Quark on Deep Space Nine. Reality doesn't get in the way of that. Not even greeting the 'actors' who play these 'parts' can diminish the Star Trek Experience.

Our experience has been that the actors are very sweet to the fans.
I know, I know, its part of their job. But still. LeVar Burton was gracious
LeVar Burton signing the millioneth autograph
to about a thousand folks individually who came for a photo op based on Geordi La Forge fame and also Reading Rainbow.

What I say to the actors from whom I get an autographed picture is this. 'The writers gave you a gift, and you gave us a gift.' And I really mean that. We are fortunate that with recorded performance, we can not only enjoy favorite episodes, but analyze and discuss them. I truly believe television writing and performing is a bono fide literary genre.

Robert Picardo, the Doctor

Okay, I have admitted to being a nerd, but seriously, the stories from Star Trek are excellent. The characters really live. I really enjoy thanking the actors and writers for sharing them with us. Quark, from DS9, still makes me laugh. Armin Shimmerman gave that comedic part lots of sophistication even with alien makeup. The Doctor, Robert Picardo, from Voyager was actually a very layered and sophisticated character. And both actors were very gracious to us humble fans.

There is some kind of interesting validation for fans to participate in the Star Trek
Universe. And folks really go to trouble to create personas and costumes. Even pets and babies, too.
Another canine fan.
A Borg triple stroller.

Would you buy a used car from this
Ferengi?

The beehive hairdo was created in the future. I did not know that.
Woopee, its Guinan.

I heard the Borg Cube has a great leg press to build up the gluteus maximus.

Special Education seems to always inspire heated discussion in the faculty lounges at least. Here's a

quote from the New York area.

Shael Polakow-Suransky, the city’s chief academic officer, said he wanted to see fewer “self-contained” classes, which he termed “an academic death sentence” for many special needs students, and more mixed classes of nondisabled and disabled children.

Here's the article.

Shakespeare, Trekkies and the Inner Light

See the Ressikan flute?
I met a wonderful writer at the Star Trek Convention today. Morgan Gendel. He wrote what is most often voted the favorite episode of the Next Generation, and possibly the favorite of all Star Trek episodes. This is Patrick Stewart's favorite episode. Its called 'The Inner Light.' Even if you hate sci fi, and detest Star Trek, you may really enjoy this one. Just try it. The writer told me he was trying to name his scripts after Beatles songs; he succeeded with this one. There is charming flute music associated with this episode, I hope including this ending doesn't ruin it for anyone.

Star Trek, The Next Generation: The Inner Light

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjCxl9JL6Ug

I purchased a writer's copy of the script for this episode, and Morgan Gendel autographed it.

Here is George Harrison's music called "The Inner Light.'

The Beatles - The Inner Light

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-KHCs4w5zs&feature=related

Folks who attend the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas are a differentiated group, alright. And it seems evident that for the most part they have a good working vocabulary to understand all those three and four syllable words in the episodes.

Another highlight today was a presentation that seemed borrowed from a college Shakespeare class. Armin Shimmerman, Jeffrey Combes, and Casey Biggs presented over an hour of scenes and recitations from the Bard, all without Sir Patrick Stewart's help. Romeo and Juliet, with Jeffrey as Juliet, Armin doing Richard III, Casey doing Henry V; and their favorite sonnets.

Didn't surprise me, I was aware most of the cast members of Star Trek were also accomplished stage actors.

These were the best Trekkies ever; their owner said their names were  Tasha, Data, and Will Riker.

' But we can and must do more to act on what we know. There’s more to do if we are to ensure that all children grow up to become adults who can cope with adversity, strengthen their communities, engage as active participants in civic life, steward our fragile planet’s limited resources and nurture the next generation to be prepared to do the same.'

I personally believe that a civilization can be great only if it nurtures and values its children.

Releasing Your Inner Nerd

In the first days of school, your class is getting to know you. Maybe this isn't the best time to release your inner nerd (though I did know a middle school science teacher who wore his Harry Potter robe, sans hat, every day. He also sponsored the Anime Club.)

LOTT (Lord of the Teachers)
But at some point, knowing Teacher as an individual and his/ her special interests (appropriate to revelation at school) is healthy. Now, some of us are more theatrical. In my family, Vaudeville never died. So I relish the chance to dress up, tell stories, sing, or dance. We're on!

Middle schoolers, especially sixth graders, really love this. Of course, if you are supervising the Halloween Dance, it is almost mandatory you dress up. See picture to the right.

It should be obvious that teachers like reading.

Mr. S's poster.
But maybe a touch of your other interests make school more interesting for the students, or help them identify with you. A computer science teacher had a very straight forward class. Except for one poster up and to the far right on the front wall.

The students were amazed he knew who the Beatles were. (They knew them from Rock Band.)

I am the greatest!
A seventh grade Math teacher has this poster up. I don't think he was a boxer, but he didn't have too many discipline problems in class.

Sometimes teachers have pics of their family, dogs, sports logos. I risked my life putting up a S F Giants pic of AT & T Park in my SoCal classroom. I'm not superstitious, but that was the year they won the Series.  The Dodgers' and Angels' fans at school were so pleased.

Teachers' screensavers, occasionally shown by the LCD projector, reveal special interests, trips, or hobbies. Maybe your wedding, or new puppies. Only as personal as you want to get. One seventh grade ELA teacher had real horseshoes on her bulletin board. Didn't take long for the kids to ask if she had horses. (She did.)

See? I have no pride, will go for the laugh every time.
I would try not to be too freaky at school. But when visiting Comicon in July, I did have fun experimenting with the concept of Zombie Teacher; I wore my teacher union shirt, and other teachery clothes and face makeup I wouldn't wear to school. I did half face makeup. Although, since I arrived at school most days at dawn, this sight might be closer to familiar to the kids than I would like to admit.

If there was an Academy Award or a Highly Qualified Credential for Nerds, I would be a strong nominee. And that's okay. Art teachers, writers and creative types can be like that. I have chosen to reveal my inner nerd. Kids (and grownups) can extend the concept of tolerance to nerds, too. So I am going to take you the the greatest gathering of nerds in the galaxy:  the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention 2012. I'm here and I'm proud.

Ambassador T'Mel of Vulcan

Now I would like you to meet T'Mel of Vulcan, who will be your tour guide this year to infinity and beyond. No wait, wrong slogan.  To boldly go where no nerd has gone before. No wait, plenty of nerds have gone before. Never mind. Live long and prosper.

Something Beautiful...in Vegas!

It may be 109 degrees outside (and it has been) but the Conservatory at the Bellagio is 72 degrees, and beautiful. The flowers are always fresh and seasonal; there is something that always surprises me, even after visiting for ten years. What was the serendipity this season?

No, the Sunflowers were a pleasant familiarity.

No, the hot air balloons, as adorable as they are, have appeared before.
Love the carousel, but we've seen it before.
Besides we cannot ride it!
Or even the giant flowered frog (seven feet long, five feet wide and cute.)

But then there was a lake, lighthouse and sailboat by a Monet like bridge. A vibrant surprise.

This is information from the Adelanto School District's website concerning Desert Trails School. Parents used the 'Parent Trigger Law' to take power over the decisions of the school. To learn more about this law, here is a link.

This is a statement on the Adelanto District's website about the situation for school starting there August 20, 2012. I have taught in the Success for All Program mentioned here. It is highly scripted but can yield excellent results, particularly in reading, if properly implemented.

Parent Empowerment Update - Desert Trails School - 7/30/2012
On July 17, 2012, the Superior Court of San Bernardino County issued a ruling that allows the Desert Trails Parent Union to proceed with the solicitation of Charter Proposals.  Many people have expressed concern related to the status of Desert Trails for the school year that will begin on August 20, 2012.

What is the impact of this ruling on the current school year that will begin on August 20, 2012?
School will proceed as normal for the current school year.  All teachers and classified employees currently assigned to Desert Trails will remain at Desert Trails.

What are the improvement strategies that have been initiated by employees and parents at Desert Trails to address student achievement?
All teachers currently assigned to Desert Trails have signed a commitment letter that affirms their intent to participate in professional staff development and activities associated with transforming student achievement at Desert Trails.

Parents and teachers collectively identified “Success for All” as a supplemental program that will guide their continuous improvement efforts in literacy.  The Success for All program will incorporate research-based instructional strategies and will include professional development and coaching for Desert Trails staff to ensure that school-wide support and intervention is in place for all students.

Desert Trails is participating in Year 2 of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) to address and transform student behavior.  The purpose of PBIS is to transform student behavior by application of principles focused on applied behavior analysis coupled with a prevention approach.  The focus of PBIS is on changing behavior through school-wide processes with an emphasis on positive behavior and support.

Desert Trails will begin an after school program this year.  The program will focus on literacy support, academic enrichment, and activities for students.  Additional details will be available from the site when the staff returns on August 6, 2012.

Desert Trails will continue on their journey to continuous improvement through implementation of the Correlates of Effective School, which are inclusive of the following:
·       Safe and Orderly Environment
·       Clear and Focused Mission
·       Climate of High Expectations for Success
·       Instructional Leadership
·       Opportunity to Learn and Time on Task
·       Frequent Monitoring of Student Progress
·       Home School Relations

We are looking forward to a productive school year for parents, students, and all employees involved with Desert Trails Elementary School.

Little Country Church

Sunday is the Lord's Day. Just like every other day.

Love Song - Little Country Church

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrUXQ60NiQw

Little country church on the edge of town
Doo-do- do-dn-do-do-do
People comin' everyday from miles around
For meetin's and for Sunday school
And it's very plain to see
It's not the way it used to be

Preacher isn't talkin' 'bout religion no more
He just wants to praise the Lord
People aren't as stuffy as they were before
They just want to praise the Lord
And it's very plain to see
It's not the way it used to be

They're talkin' 'bout revival and the need for love
That little church has come alive
Workin' with each other for the common good
Puttin' all the past aside
Long hair, short hair, some coats and ties
People finally comin' around
Lookin' past the hair and straight into the eyes
People finally comin' around
And it's very plain to see
It's not the way it used to be
