Hispanic Heritage Month: Sergio Romo
Sergio Romo, wife Chelsea, sons Rilen and Rex. |
Closer, World Series 2012, last out. |
During the parade in San Francisco to celebrate the World Series win in 2012, Sergio wore a notable tee shirt to emphasize his belief that all kids deserve a chance and to make a strike again stereotyping.
Making a statement during the World Series celebration in San Francisco, 2012. |
Sergio is devoted to his family and in the following video he states:
“I’m first-generation Mexican-American. Both of my parents were born in Mexico. My dad always spoke of the American dream as a man hard working, earning his keep, being able to take care of his family in a respectful manner.”
Romo is standing proud with the Dream is Now Campaign
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fG1U2dKoXQ
Sergio also says, "When I hear of a student being undocumented, I take it as kids going to school, they're just trying to learn and get better, so I don't find anything negative in that." He signs off with, "I"m Sergio Romo, pitcher of the world champion San Francisco Giants. Today I'm standing proud with the Dream is Now campaign, because I strongly believe that there should be a pathway for approximately 2 million undocumented students to earn their United States citizenship, so that they can lead a productive life and give back to the only country they know as home. They deserve a chance to live their dream, and we will all win if they do."
Sergio has also been invited to use his notoriety in ice cream.
If it were available around here, I'd buy it. |

Synopsis
At a public school in Newark, N.J., the staff answers the phone by saying, "You've reached John F. Kennedy High School, Newark's best-kept secret." JFK provides an exceptional environment for students with special-education needs. In Best Kept Secret, Janet Mino, who has taught a class of young men for four years, is on an urgent mission. She races against the clock as graduation approaches for her severely autistic minority students. Once they graduate and leave the security of this nurturing place, their options for living independently will be few. Mino must help them find the means to support themselves before they "age out" of the system. (90 minutes)MzTeachuh: Music that Makes You Smarter

Vincent's Welcome
Sunflowers, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh |
Info from the British National Gallery:
This is one of four paintings of sunflowers dating from August and September 1888. Van Gogh intended to decorate Gauguin's room with these paintings in the so-called Yellow House that he rented in Arles in the South of France. He and Gauguin worked there together between October and December 1888.
Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo in August 1888, 'I am hard at it, painting with the enthusiasm of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won't surprise you when you know that what I'm at is the painting of some sunflowers. If I carry out this idea there will be a dozen panels. So the whole thing will be a symphony in blue and yellow. I am working at it every morning from sunrise on, for the flowers fade so quickly. I am now on the fourth picture of sunflowers. This fourth one is a bunch of 14 flowers ... it gives a singular effect.'
The dying flowers are built up with thick brushstrokes (impasto). The impasto evokes the texture of the seed-heads. Van Gogh produced a replica of this painting in January 1889, and perhaps another one later in the year. The various versions and replicas remain much debated among Van Gogh scholars.

Here is a lesser known poem by Poe; what a cry for help.
By Edgar Allan PoeA Dream Within a Dream
Edgar Allan Poe |
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
