Is This Cartoon Bigoted?

All Rights Reserved for the artist, but I don't think civil rights are observed here for the student or parent. I don't like the stereotyping of the baby, either.

I have taught for two decades in SoCal, by choice always in areas that qualify as low-income and with a variety of minorities. I grew up in the sixties, listening to MLK and RFK and watched the Civil Rights movement include the handicapped ( IDEA) in the seventies. But there is still work to be done in folks' hearts, apparently. I switched my political affiliation to Independant after the 08 election because of the vitriolic hysteria, not to mention the outright racism rising like a gross stink across America. I am sad. I am angry about this.

My students don't need stuck up staff judging them or their parents. Life is tough enough. (Plus I've observed plenty of staff dressed inappropriately. How sexy do you really need to be at a middle school?) Can't we exert some tolerance and kindness? If the student has a dress code violation, address it. If the parent is at school for a meeting or to help their student BE GRATEFUL.

Here are political cartoons and articles from the beginning of Obama's term. I still am shocked anyone, much less a person with national resources to publish, would have the nerve to put this out there. And, so sadly, still have this bigotry in their minds.

Poem Sampler of Jewish Faith--For the Holidays

Jewish holidays are coming up.

Two holidays well-known to even non-Jewish folks are Rosh Hashanah the Jewish New Year (celebrated September 17 and 18, 2012) and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (celebrated September 26, 2012.)

This site has more info on Jewish holidays:

Jewish Holidays

http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday0.htm

Here are a few poems from the Poetry Foundation, just the beginnings,  that I especially enjoyed. Be sure to check out the rest.

Rosh Hashanah

To Him Who Is Feared
by Eleazar ben Kalir

To Him who is feared a Crown will I bring.
Thrice Holy each day acclaim Him my King;
At altars, ye mighty, proclaim loud His praise, . . .
The New Year
by Emma Lazarus

Not while the snow-shroud round dead earth is rolled,
And naked branches point to frozen skies.
When orchards burn their lamps of fiery gold, . . .
The Alphabet
by Karl Shapiro

The letters of the Jews as strict as flames
Or little terrible flowers lean
Stubbornly upwards through the perfect ages, . . .

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur 1984
by Adrienne Rich

What is a Jew in solitude?
What would it mean not to feel lonely or afraid . . .
These Things I Do Remember
by Solomon Ephraim Ben Aaron of Lenczicz

These things I do remember; O I pour
My soul out for them. All the ages long
Hatred pursueth us; through all the years . . .
Open the Gates
by Anonymous

Open the gates—the gates of the Temple,
Swift to Thy sons, who Thy truths have displayed.
. . .
His Sovereignty
by Kalonymos ben Moses of Lucca

His sovereignty is o’er my gathered throng;
His glory is my faith within,
I seek Him for atonement of my sin— . . .
For We Are Thy People
by Anonymous

For we are thy people, and thou art our God;
We are thy children and thou our father.
We are thy servants, and thou art our master; . . .
The Alphabet
by Karl Shapiro

The letters of the Jews as strict as flames
Or little terrible flowers lean
Stubbornly upwards through the perfect ages, . . .

Thank you, Poetry Foundation

Best Simile Ever: like a fragment of angry candy e. e. cummings

the Cambridge ladies who live in furnished souls

By E. E. Cummings
the Cambridge ladies who live in furnished souls
are unbeautiful and have comfortable minds
(also, with the church's protestant blessings
daughters,unscented shapeless spirited)
they believe in Christ and Longfellow, both dead,
are invariably interested in so many things—
at the present writing one still finds
delighted fingers knitting for the is it Poles?
perhaps. While permanent faces coyly bandy
scandal of Mrs. N and Professor D
.... the Cambridge ladies do not care, above
Cambridge if sometimes in its box of
sky lavender and cornerless, the
moon rattles like a fragment of angry candy

After all the years of loving this poem, I just realized he capitalized the word Cambridge.

How sarcastic he was.

Best simile ever:

the moon rattles like a fragment of angry candy
