In the Future, Today’s Education Will Look Like ‘19th-Century Medicine’

The big secret in public education is that the variation in teacher quality is astounding. In America, it’s quite large. But in Canada the variation is much less pronounced. Why? Because they spend more time training their teachers, giving them the time and space to share lessons and take part in PLCs (professional learning communities).

How to use music to boost literary understanding

One international teacher explains how pairing literary texts with curriculum-relevant music can secure learning.

Anybody Here Seen My Old Friend Martin?

On being a teen in 1968--It was inspiring, invigorating and terrifying. We high schoolers heard the inspiration of JFK's Inaugural Address and his Space Speech, and saw him buried. We witnessed our classmates down South spat on while they integrated high school, being beaten, bitten by police dogs and swept away by fire hoses while they peacefully demonstrated for equal rights. We saw our little sisters blown up in their Sunday School rooms. We sat in our history classes learning about 'the better angels of our nature' and deeply wanted to see ours arise. We breathed in Dr. King's spirit and lost him, too. And two months later, RFK. So, that nerdy teenaged girl-being seriously affected by her generation's experiences-now teaches MLK Day. My class talked and wrote and listened to this song from 1968. My students thought it was beautiful. We did too, back in the day.

Abraham * Martin and John *** Dion - YouTube

Abraham, Martin And John
Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free,
Someday soon it's gonna be one day.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin and John.

20 Tips to Help De-escalate Interactions With Anxious or Defiant Students

Students’ behavior is a form of communication and when it’s negative it almost always stems from an underlying cause. There are many reasons kids might be acting out, which makes it difficult for a teacher in a crowded classroom to figure out the root cause. But even if there was time and space to do so, most teachers receive very little training in behavior during their credentialing programs. On average, teacher training programs mandate zero to one classes on behavior and zero to one courses on mental health. Teacher training programs mostly assume that kids in public schools will be “typical,” but that assumption can handicap teachers when they get into real classrooms.
