Studying the Battle of Gettysburg, we are stunned by the stubborn hubris of the generals in the face of incomprehensible death. It was such from the beginning of this war, and would continue through to the brutal end.

The entire series is very worth watching. You could find it on Netflix, for sure. Maybe Youtube, in sections.

This scene summarizes the noble cause as viewed by the North. The very North, Maine to be exact. The entire movie does give insight into the motives of both sides in this war.

In the movie, Gettyburg, Martin Sheen plays Robert E. Lee. As Lee, Sheen make the statement, "I am a Virginian." Which pretty summarize the South's attitude. 

Lincoln's Gettyburg Address, which dedicated the battle region as a cemetary, occurred in November, 1863. This year's commemoration will include a new documentary by Ken Burns.
