Happy New Year, PLN: Reflecting and Resolving

It is a privilege for me to communicate with the world each day. Wow, who would have thought this would be possible? And for me to have access to the best educators, new thoughts and innovations, and the optimism for our students worldwide. And participate with the problem-solving. What an amazing PLN!

The educational positives of 2014?
  • More accessiblitly for poor students to the digital possibilities. Still a long way to go.
  • Learning theory shows we can improve learning outcomes for everyone. As a teacher, I have always believed this, but now the research is undeniable.
  • More educational emphasis educating the whole child through Social/Emotional Learning plus the Maker Movement and the Nature Movements.
  • Inequities due to demagraphics are more clearly identified. Solutions need to absolutely follow. Free and Appropriate Education for ALL.
 The negatives of 2015?
  • Ed Tech is obsequious, but classroom management does not balance true efficacy of ed tech with the needs of child development.
  • Latent obsessiveness over test scores have maintained sedentary classrooms where students do not have the chance to appropriately develop as a whole child.
  • Minority and impoverished students still do not have educational equity, especially in the digital world.
Looking forward in 2015.
  • In 2015, every citizen is a photojournalist broadcasting and documenting the inequities, the achievements, the voice of the community. In education, we don't just listen to the 'Ivory Tower' experts anymore. This is healthy. We can all collaborate to benefit all our students.
  • Ed Tech, Digital Access--everyone is working to get this to the entire student population; some work with a heart for the students, some see a great financial gain to be obtained.
  • Best wishes from SoCal.
  • Differentiation will empower all students to develop their talents and interests and therefore benefit society.
Well, I see I have just laid our tasks for this coming year! I guess we better get busy.

Best wishes, my international PLN!
Melanie Link Taylor, M.Ed.

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter # 3

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

Thank you so much for the acknowledgement of our team at the last staff meeting of the year. We truly appreciated the introduction of our team at the first meeting of the year, when you were welcomed as our new administrator. And mentioning us yesterday at our end-of-the-year Bar-B-Que was awesome.

In the previous five years I've taught at CHS, under different administration, the Special Ed. team has never been introduced or recognized in any way.

I felt it would be a good idea just so the other staff would be aware of the psychologists, County personnel, teachers, and paraprofessionals on campus, if nothing else. We are rather busy bees, flitting from classroom to classroom and building to building period by period. It's good to know who is who.

But the respect given by you to introduce us the first meeting of the year, and then announce our timely completion of all our Special Ed. deadlines this year, and the improvement our students--that was an unexpected pat on the back. And also giving credit to the general ed. teachers for working with us to implement the IEPs--our gratitude is unbounded.

It is the norm for us to accomplish these goals, but very special to be acknowledged. Special Ed. staff are normally type B personalities, we just like to do the job without drawing attention--but thanks for announcement. That will make our job with Gen. Ed. easier next year.

Sincerely,
Special Ed. Teacher

Educational Leadership Philosophy

My suggestion: In all schools, large or small, all staff needs introduction and recognition. Special Education remains a mystery to most gen ed teachers, and the principal can create an efficient, positive work environment for all staff by modeling camaraderie and disseminating information on what unique, rather complicated job the Special Ed. team does. Meeting all Special Education annual expectations in a timely manner probably should be awarded a trophy or Starbuck's card, but let's not get carried away.

Are You Your School's Grumpy Cat?

I confess, at times I have been the grumpy cat at school. As I realized it, I would go through this handy checklist I once heard in a sermon to see why I wasn't at my best and being grumpy:
H Am I grumpy because I am HUNGRY? Did I eat breakfast? Lunch?
A Am I ANGRY about something unresolved from my life and find it hard to maintain   professionalism? Need advice, counseling, etc? Meditation? This could also be ANXIOUS. What steps can I take to feel more optimistic?
L Am I feeling LONELY and isolated? Is there a friendly face at school? Maybe the maintenance crew?
T Am I TIRED? Silly question. Teaching is a full on, multi-level challenge. We're always some kind of tired. But what am I doing about it? Delegating? Early bedtime? Deliberately choosing R and R?

Maybe a person is just a Type A and generally judgmental and bossy. Give it some thought, Ms/Mr Type A--how productive is that, really? There is more control and power in kindness. You can manipulate others through achieving mutual success, and be looking so good yourself.

Here is what the web is saying, Grumpy Cat.

Cheesy Football Jokes And A Pep Talk From Bill Walsh

What do you put in the N zone to stop

the other team from scoring?

A Scorecrow.

Where do hungry football players play?
In the Supper Bowl.

What did the football say to the punter?
"I get a kick out of you."

 Why do coaches like punters?
Because punters always put
their best foot forward.

What do you call a lineman's kids?
Chips off the old blocker.

What football player should you be suspicious of?
The quarterback sneak.

The saga continues.

Why did the football coach go to the bank? A: To get his quarter back!
Q: How do football players stay cool during the game? A: They stand close to the fans?

Which football team cooks gourmet meals together?
The Kansas City Chefs.

Now, Bill Walsh, that's the coach of coaches.

He wrote some very positive advice for teachers and everyone who works with kids.

"Kids who take part in any sport get to feel the euphoria of victory,
but they also learn how to deal with loss."

"Having to play a role determined by coaches, whether it is exactly what a player hopes for or not, teaches the acceptance of authority -- but not an automatic, robotic acceptance."

"Athletes have to also understand that anxiety is not a flaw, and that overcoming it is possible -- and sometimes a lot easier than they thought."

"The social elements of team sports have far-reaching effects. Team members develop the ability to communicate under stress. They learn to respect others whether they like them or not, and if a team is ethically coached, its members also are taught to respect their opponents no matter how fierce the rivalry."

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter # 4

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

Since CHS opened, the centralized computer system has not been printing to our own classrooms, as you know. Our stuff prints anywhere in school. This big mess is complicated by the fact that many teachers are just throwing the printed material away and not even putting it in the staff lounge for retrieval. I always put it there--it saves time, paper, and it is just courteous. Some of the things we print are also confidential, and easily identifiable and could be put in our teacher boxes.

I know IT is working on this. But in the meantime, could you also make an announcement so we can have our stuff?

Thanks,
Staff Member Flummoxed by Rudeness
