A Book, a Physical Book...

Loving the library.

A book, a physical book, is like a familiar teddy bear that can cuddle in bed with you, smile to you from your bedstand, have a lunch date at your favorite diner--with you as the power source. A book, a physical book, is a momento from childhood, a rite of passage filled with notes and comments in the margins of a college text in your own handwriting (with a pen), a powerful army of soldiers lined up on your bookshelf creating a physical, three dimensional fortress to fight the Battle of Ignorance and Boredom. And books, physical books, supply the tactile, visual and olfactory stimulation we need.

Given to 10 year old MzTeachuh by Aunt Irene.
This is a copy of Black Beauty my Aunt Irene gave to me in 1960 (along with Little Women) because you can also wrap physical books up pretty as a gift for a ten-year-old, or save them for future generations as a tradition of literacy. My eldest child (UC Berkeley grad, English major) is starting a family library, and I'm one of the contributors. So far I've contributed lots of history, mainly from David McCullough. What a privilege to join the league of libraries throughout history!
