Principal's Suggestion Box Letter # 12

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

I just received our yearly letter from you with our assignments and news about school. Exactly what is 'The Annual Physical Fitness Test for All Teachers' ? Is this a joke? I realize that certain teachers had to go to the  occupational center prior to hiring to demonstrate they were fit enough for their jobs (like Special Education with lifting kids in wheelchairs and such), but outside of TB updates and declaring any accommodations  we need, I've never heard of a physical fitness test. Is that legal? Does the Union know? I recall you were concerned last year about absences due to flu and even whooping cough. Is this related?

What does this really mean? Running a mile? Push-ups, Marine style? Weight checks? I am very concerned. Do I need special clothing for this, like gym stuff?

I will call your office and ask the staff for info.

Concerned,
Out of Shape Teacher

My suggestion: I know whereof I write. I confess, I used the excuse of commuting and work to just about ruin my health. So, I would say to you--don't let that happen. Don't wait until 'I have more time' (or retire) to exercise, eat better, slim down, get those boosters. You are important without all the value the school or family put on you. Pretend you are raising a baby--and the baby is YOU! How did baby sleep? Eat? Did the baby get exercise and go outside? Is the baby fussy? Why? Is the baby happy? Good. Is the baby regular, alert, actively learning? Apply all the analysis and affection of raising a baby to yourself. You will live longer and happier and be a better teacher for it.

But wouldn't that be something if there were an annual physical fitness test for teachers?
