Women's History Month: Wangari Maathai

Intelligence, compassion and courage--added up to the Nobel Prize for Wangari Maathai, a woman from Kenya who chose to become educated (Phd.) yet rather than become an elite, worked with village women across Kenya to plant millions upon millions of trees, around local villages, to reverse the effect of colonial deforestation. This was a double whammy that empowered women and girls while asserting the power to protect and enhance the environment.
