Movie Review: The Hobbit (We Needed To Hear Dwarves Singing)

We really needed to hear dwarves singing. And we did; the Hobbit provided this necessary service. I'm so very glad 'The Hobbit' story is spread out so we can have this.

J.R.R. Tolkien created the world we viewed in 'The Hobbit,' and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It is interesting that Jackson waited to do the Hobbit until now. I would say our real world in which we viewed them (the post 9/11 world) needed a hero we could identify with. Frodo lives.

But what about Bilbo? We've seen him at the end of his life, affected by the ring. Now we flashback (so, 'The Hobbit' is one long flashback this way rather than an introduction to this world) to his choice of adventure with the crew of dwarves and Gandalf. I'm of the opinion we needed the dwarves more that Bilbo.

The sincerity and comic relief. The hearty appetites and deliberate lack of social graces. What you see is what you get. And those wonderful senses of humor, rollicking like a Gilbert and Sullivan musical.

And they could sing. Wow. I'd go to the Misty Mountains with them right now. The idealism and sense of purpose with those lovely voices.

The dwarves had intense purpose; they had all made a deliberate decision, but one in which the odds were so much against their success. Like so many men and women in real history. And even while on their quest, circumstances continually get worse,  they adapt, reassess their beliefs and are flexible in their assessment of allies. I would guess those elves in Rivendell could be unbearably stuck up.

Gandalf knows them well and Bilbo, too. I think Gandalf has his hands full just with Bilbo and the dwarves.

Originally written as a children's book, The Hobbit is well worth seeing, but even better to read it with your class or family. Tolkien has a wonderful writing style, really moves along, portrays tremendous settings. It is so worth it to spend some time in Middle Earth.
