On Your Mark, Get Set--It's the First Day of School!

Of course, the goof-offs are hoping for a disorganized, lenient teacher so they can goof-off with impunity! But we yearn to be the teacher they think back to and say,

"The teacher helped me so much. Man, how strict! That teacher always demanded the best of me and I knew they cared because they never gave up on me.

They believed in me"

Here are three sites that will help you to be that teacher.

1964: "The Importance of the Civil Rights Act"

Learn about the impact of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, often considered one of the most influential laws in U.S. history, in this video from American Experience: “1964.” It not only ended segregation in public places, it altered the “southern way of life” and created a new America. Although Lyndon Johnson celebrated its passage, he knew that it would bring sweeping and sometimes challenging changes to society.

Principal's Suggestion Box Letter #30

These letters are absolutely fictional (to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent.) But, with the hint of truth, maybe we can make some adjustments. Principals have the best chance to do that.

Dear Principal,

I would strongly suggest  better supervision at the high school. Why aren't the teachers at their doors during passing periods? The horseplay and bullying is out of control. My daughter, a sophomore, continues to be worried about going to school. She isn't being bullied, but the goofing off on the stairs is dangerous and the noise level and obscenity in the cafeteria is very disturbing to her. Please do something about this.
        Concerned Parent

This isn't an easy problem to solve. High schools are understaffed and students are stressed. But how to give structure to schools? What consequences will be appropriate?

Many school are adopting PBIS. Wait, what is that?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) has definitely made its mark on the world of education. States, districts, and schools have made PBIS a requirement in an attempt to improve student behaviors and, ultimately, academic outcomes. PBIS now influences what our schools look like, how our schools discipline students, how educators talk to students, and much more.

Does this system work? Everything, as always, depends on who is involved with the program. More counseling and personal interaction with individual students can definitely reduce aberrant behavior, giving all students a chance to enjoy and excel at school.

In many schools, finding this time can be a huge challenge. Even if teachers can find the time to meet and talk, sometimes the group is not cohesive or collaborative enough to be very productive. And other times, they might not have a person in the school who teaches the same content or grade level. Teachers who want to plan and collaborate may have few, if any, options.
