Teachable Moment: Memorial Day

Family tradition of service.

Memorial Day is a fine time to chat with family members about how your family may have served in the military.  No matter your take on war or militarism, a young person can gain perspective on their own heritage, family beliefs, and family history while bar-b-queing in the backyard talking to grandma or uncle. Some of the stories will be very sad, inspiring, and amazing all at the same time.

Teachers can give various assignments to augment the students' understanding of history and taking pride and giving support  in the military without glorifying war.
